Top Winter Hair Mistakes to Avoid

Winter is coming! That’s right, winter is right around the corner, and this year we are giving you the gift of healthy hair by not letting you commit these hair mistakes that are causing more damage to your hair than good. The cold, dry air that comes with winter can dehydrate your strands, leaving them weak, dry, and brittle to the touch. These conditions can lead to more damage by promoting breakage and limpness that can cause hair loss and make the hair look uneven. However, we are here to save your hair and make it look its best by making sure you are aware of the top winter hair mistakes to avoid!

Mistake #1 Wearing the Wrong Hat

It is without a doubt that wearing a hat is a staple during the winter, as it helps insulate your body temperature by 50% to keep you warm. However, wearing the wrong hat can add friction to your strands and make them frizzier, dryer, and more prone to breakage. Hats to avoid are those made of nylon and polyester as well as other synthetic fibers. On the other hand, hats made of wool and waxed cotton are recommended as they help keep you warm yet are gentle on the hair and won't pull or tug on it. Opting for more loose fitting hats is also a great way to make sure that your hair breathes and doesn't experience further damage.

Mistake #2 Leaving the House with Wet Hair

As much as we tend to be on the go and out of the door, leaving the house with wet hair during the winter is a big no-no. With temperatures reaching below zero, it's possible that your hair could freeze too. When wet hair freezes, it crystallizes and expands the water molecules, causing the hair to expand and break off. This is why it is crucial to make sure that your hair is dry either the night before or before you leave your house. Did anyone call for a hair popsicle? Yikes!

Mistake #3 Using Too Much Heat to Style

We get it, it’s cold outside, and you want your hair to look good during the holidays. However, there are precautions to take when it comes to heat, even when it is cold outside. The heat inside mixed with the cold, dry air from the outside can add extra dryness and damage, so by using too much heat to style your hair, you could be making it worse. We recommend using a heat spray to protect the hair from further damage or a leave-in conditioner to add shine and moisture back to the hair.

Why not try the Thermal Spray and Hydrating Leave-in Conditioner by Nutrifuse. They are sulfate and paraben-free and made with gentle ingredients to protect and revive dry, brittle hair. The Thermal Spray protects strands from heat up to 450°F while strengthening and smoothing the hair and locks in hydration, and creates a seal to prevent breakage for soft, manageable hair style-ready. On the other hand, the Hydrating Leave-in Conditioner is made with argan oil, jojoba oil, and collagen that work together to help lock in moisture without a greasy or weighed down feel. It is also packed with essential oils rich in vitamins A, E, and antioxidants that help protect the hair from further damage.

Mistake #4 Washing Hair With Hot Water

Similar to the last mistake, using hot water is another common winter hair slip-up. Again, we understand that the weather outside is a bit frightful, but your hair still needs to be delightful. Using warm water is acceptable to a certain extent, but using hot boiling water to wash your hair is probably one of the worst things you can do for your hair and scalp. Hot water can wreak havoc on your strands by sucking out moisture and leaving it dry and dehydrated, which can lead to breakage and very dry and frizzy hair. No thank you!

Mistake #5 Avoiding Adding Moisture Back to the Hair

Keeping your hair moisturized during the winter is a must! Considering how dry the hair gets due to the weather, making sure that you are doing hair masks, applying hair oils, and using leave-in conditioners or hair creams heavily during this time of the year. We recommend using hair products that are moisturizing and won't strip the hair of its natural oils and hair products meant for treating dry, damaged hair. For example, Nutrifuse's hair products are all made to revive and ultimately reverse hair damage by incorporating moisturizing, gentle, and beneficial ingredients to the hair.

Before you head out into the winter cold, we recommend trying to avoid at least one or two of these top winter hair mistakes we included in this blog. Are you guilty of any of the above?
